Reflective Practice as a Teacher 1

Our teacher trainer usually gives an example in his classroom management lessons, “Do not say hello young man, are you the son of Mr. Doctor? How is the Doctor sir doing? Students notice even the minutest details of our behaviour and conduct. The doctor’s son may enjoy the friendliness but it will force other students to feel aloof”.

The extraneousness and casualness without prior intentions give rise to a sense of distaste among the socially or economically less privileged students. Such students feel overlooked and deprived which leads to such despises that the teacher cannot afford.

The food for thought is that there must be differentiation, and focus on individuals but without being seemingly biased. Students are really proactive in their observation of their facilitators.

The challenge lies in being unbiased and giving equal priority to all the learners without ignoring or overlooking any individual.

I would like to give two examples of such challenges from my personal observation.
1) A student of grade 10 came to me with a complaint about a teacher saying that he was involved in favouritism. On further inquiry, she added, “He is looking at particularly some of the fast learners during his lessons and most of us crave for his attention”.

(I tried to be ‘PrISMic’ by asking the student, “Do you have any favourite teacher?”. The student named a teacher as I expected. I asked the reason behind her liking that particular teacher and all her answers were academic, like ‘because he teaches well, entertains us, doesn’t demonstrate any sign of favouritism etc.” I posed another question, “Would you like any other teacher who showcases the same?” Her answer was “yes” obviously. What I added further was, “See dear, a teacher is here to teach and facilitate the students with some expectations. It’s obvious that there will be some sort of bent towards some of the students who fulfill the expectations of the teacher. It’s not favouritism but a natural tendency just like you said about your favourite teacher. It is psychologically embedded in us that we like those who befit our expectations”.) The student was convinced but I myself was really not because there is always room for improvement.

2) I went to a lower grade class to take an oral test. As per instructions, I started questioning by focusing on the ‘slow learners’. I called the slow learners one by one who were continuously making mistakes and the ‘fast learners’ were raising their hands every time. I was continuously retorting, “I will come to you later on”. Finally a student who was continuously raising his hand retorted back with a whisper, “I’m also here to solve questions and give answers”. He didn’t know that I overheard him. As a remedial step, I went to those fast learners and assigned them individual tasks based on their level of intelligence. The students seemed partly satisfied because their work was not showcased, so I collected their works and showed them in front of the class and asked others to clap for those students and then for themselves. The students seemed satisfied but I wasn’t because there is always room for improvement.

These events put me in a reflective mood and the reflection is still going on. Again the same point comes to my mind, ‘Students observe more than we can think of’. They’re so innocent in their observations but as true professionals, we must not be so innocent to overlook the course of our actions. The students must never be let to feel distant or deprived because everyone of them wants our attention. That’s why calling their names to show that each student is focused and each student matters is a must. A teacher though is a teacher but s/he should show some friendly concern and let the learners feel equal part of the teaching and learning process.

Instructions should be differentiated without letting any student feel overlooked.
Never underestimate students’ observation.

YOU KNOW WHAT?

You know what?
The misty fret is coming,
The calm rejoice ended
With you has lost the meaning,
The worldly soothing life.

You know what?
The glee attempted so far
Is crying and reproaching
That which is almost here,
With omens of some ending.

You know what?
The heart was flower peaceful,
Did turn into a pigeon–
Uncaged and unfettered,
Thus fled from dearie bosom

When you conveyed the meaning
Of foggy day and evening,
My being just then departed,
Now I am flesh and bony.

Yet I may not forget to
Stay and live and inhale,
But colors of my life
Will fade away exactly.

You know what?
The taste of earthly pleasures
Will die away from inward
And restlessness will hover
By keeping me in view.

You know what?
I won’t ever fly then
My wings are your presence
Stay and let me fly high
Or leave and cut my feathers.

Botanical Hearth

A Mountainous Wild Flowery Plant

No experiencing being can ever disregard the impactfulness of the sensuous projection of the mighty meaningful impression that dwells among the pretty awesomeness of botanical multiverse. The soberly soothing satisfaction which breathes through leaves and flowers is fantabulous in its distinguished pleasure for heart. The floral bliss motivates the eyes with undeniably unavoidable sweetness that fills both the mindful sense of sight and love-seeking experiential existence with satiety of contentment.

Green is not merely a color and greenery is just part of the complete whole of nature but it’s as fierce as sharp yellow and as complete as nature itself. Plants and flowers are not nice because they are appealing but they are lovely because they are truly lovely.

Botanical hearth is the stove where emotions are cooked and its warmth ripens the true being of pleasure-loving flesh. It comforts the literary perception of natural souls, literally.

Autumn’s Arrival in Madaklasht

Madaklash Gol (Far-fetched view of Darbar Shahi)

Just like its distinguished culture and geographic location, the seasonal diversity of Madaklasht is beyond words and description. The natural atmosphere and purely untouched environment are truly eye-catching. Variety of sceneries from gorges to ravines, hills to mountains, plains to fields, greenish to yellowish beauty and distinctive species of flora and fauna provide the mightiest justification of God’s creative majesty.

Captured from the way to Ailok

The colors of nature here provide colors of joy to all those with aesthetic sense, and artistic pleasure to all the literary minds. Those who seek shelter in the bosom of nature should pave their way to its unmarred blend of beauty and joy.

A bottle of Strawberry Lemonade 7up symbolizes the variety before it.

Autumn in Madaklasht is worth a thousand springs marred by the stains of human existence. It pleases and releases the soul from the chaos of the world behind the mountains.

Setting Sun

Here lies the sophisticated happiness mixed with soothing satisfaction. Truly, nature is the keeper of the pure hormonal ecstasies. It blesses the eyes with unforgettable glimpses of sober but lovely euphoria.

Prevailing Dusk

Let the pleasurable beauty of Autumn’s Arrival in Madaklasht heal the spiritual wounds of vacancy and let it fill the gaps of taste in life.

Departure and Memories

As Khalil Gibran points out in The Prophet that even departure is sign of arrival because someone who leaves a place arrives a place. So Leaving is attached to arrival. They can’t be separated.

Bitter departure doesn’t dissolve in warm welcome but it lessens the intensity of the immense nostalgia. As a matter of fact, keeping oneself engaged can give way to recovery earlier than it is expected.

Leaving is not always a choice but a compulsion more often which leads to the store of pleasant experiences of the past ending in the sourness of the present.

Memories are perhaps the greatest impulse for the uprise of emotions. No matter what kind of memory it is, it is enough to trigger sentiments either negative or positive. Again, the positivity and negativity are subject to ones approach (the subject of positive and negative experience is already discussed in a previous blog post).

No doubt, sweet memories are the feast for the subconscious mind and a stable and working emotional faculty. Having memories that boost positive approach and optimism is a blessing for existence and a blessing for the time yet to come.

We don’t live for memories but they live with us. Pleasant memories uncontrollably evoke emotions that ‘lie too deep for tears’.

But the question is who decides what to remember and what not to? Is it we? Or mind? Or heart? Or any external factor?
Though this is not a mystery but it surely is dark room where all you have to find is a dot of black ink.

Risk

“The greatest risk in life is not taking one”.
Risk is an inevitable ingredient of the pace of life. We hear us saying ” not taking risk”. Do we really not? I think we do. Someone says that taking a step in itself is a risk, for one can stumble or fall down. Isn’t it? If ‘risk’ is the “exposure to harm” or even merely the possibility of loss then of course it is. Taking a step is a risk. It’s not that how we perceive things but it is how we interpret. It’s about how we mould possibilities.

“Life isn’t fair. It’s just fairer than death, that’s all”.
“Death is more than certain” but life precedes it for sure. Undeniably, man has the choice in life. Man is the chooser if not looser. Man chooses the roads he takes , leaving behind ‘the road not taken’. Hereby begins the the voyage of uncertainties of the steps being taken. Lo! Hereby begins the travelogue of risks.

Challenging rhythm for the sake of rhythm, risk, no doubt brings about change. Change which is the food of life, its sustainability and growth. Growth towards and leading to Eternity.

Yes, it’s like that. Doing nothing, in itself is a risk. Why not do something then?
Isn’t it that the better the chances we avail, the greater the risks we take?
Why not take a risk for a better and greater change then?
Prudent decisions soothe the feet if not relieve the legs, during the barefooted race of life. Do not ever underestimate conscious wit. Let’s take risks and bring about change.
If possible!
Is it possible?

The Virtue of Hospitality

Hospitality is a virtue, a rare sight to be seen in the monotonously dynamic life. The topsy turvy selfishness dwelling among us hinders this virtue amidst the chaotic state of materialism. Rarely do we consider it as a grace and frankly speaking, we are so occupied by Selfism that the idea of showing friendliness through warm reception remains out of sight and out mind. People are all dependant but independent enough to breathe without any formal courtesy but all keep a thirst for neighborliness whether willingly or unwillingly and whether knowingly or unknowingly, more especially when the dwelling is among strangers because there lies no expectation but hope only.

With Hospitable Strangers Far from Home Who became Kith&Kins at Booni.

Cordiality proves to be a blessing during extreme solitude and warm heartedness from the part of the living circle is well wished for. We do not abide by the necessities of social interaction emotional intelligence. As a result, man is getting away from man. We do not feel for each other which turns our empathy into sympathy and sympathy to nothingness. Our coexistence is being a matter of compulsion and cooperation is becoming not a matter of choice but an undesired obligation.

But why? Why is this coldness and what is it for? Perhaps the best of us can come up with the answer of Selfishness. I call it Selfism when selfishness touches its summit. Our materialism, expectations and extremity of desires to grow without considering the people around us or regarding them only living bodies has sown much thorns in the path of hospitality.

Many do think of it as a pleasure that we do not breed hostility at least, so what if we do not give way to hospitality! They say that the absence of the latter does not mean the existence of the former. Is it really so? Maybe… Might be… Possibly…

At Juniper Hotel and Restaurant Booni.

But I see it in another way and through other aspect. We are giving way to prejudices, despairs and promoting the philosophy of “I’ve nothing to do with” as far as the social and societal positivity is concerned. We are brooding negligence by thinking ourselves to be independent from dependence which is a sheer myth. If I cut my tree, you won’t be able to get fresh air, believe me you can catch asthma. If you plant a tree beside my field, my crops will not get sufficient light. I can starve.

Everybody is self-sufficient but nobody is self-sufficient. We are buying hostility at the expense of hospitality. We are paving way for deep-rooted long term hatred through our intense Selfism. We must be cautious of what we unknowingly sow. A little insight into the near-far future can show us our endeavors regarding humanism and humanitarian survival.

We should try to live beyond crudest autotheism and egocentricity. We should love each other like different parts of the same whole and different organs of the same body by taking care of each other. We should develop and nurture hospitality.

@alnaveedahmad

Hospitality is not to be Forgotten but to be Nurtured.

I Care Not

I Care not for faces but yes I look for center, the core of mighty fellows who show deceiving guises, so my desire rises, to know and get to depths of these worthy beings that muster up courage and dejection. My friends and foes alike, they both deny me untill I too start denying. They keep snakes in collars but roses in the bosom. So curious is cognition which worsens the ignition of curious cells inside my holy worthless body, and worthy soul unholy….

My friends are truly awesome, my foes are so amazing..

I need not overlook them, they need not have me noted. We live, observe then after, we feel utmost contentment in sighing breaths and say then, “Ah folks and fellow bodies”.
